On the boat before seeing petroglyphs on the Colorado River
Greetings all from Arizona! This post is going to be far superior to yesterday's ... Maggie Allen is clearly lacking in the blogging skills department. Anyway, today we woke up at an ungodly hour (6AM) in order to get on the road by 7. We ended up being a bit late because the water literally took 45 minutes to boil - let's just say that the tiny RV stoves leave much to be desired. We spent three and a half hours on the road to get to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, which, surprisingly, is not a large sculpture of a cactus, but your normal national park. I was pleasantly surprised. After a 15-minute informational video about the Sonoran desert, we went on a mile and a half loop and looked at the huge variety of cactus and other landscape. It was absolutely breathtaking. I didn't know there was such a wide variety of cactus, but there is. To be quite honest, I'm rather tired of cacti. I miss trees! The big excitement of the day was when Evie managed to lodge a cactus ball into her ankle, something that no one should ever have to experienc. I also got sunburned after an hour in the sun, which is entirely not fair. I will unfortunately be wearing my SPF 55 tomorrow in the very strong sun. After we had hiked the loop, Ms. Dickinson and Stratton were nowhere to be found, and we were hungry... so we broke into the RV through the window. No big deal. I stood on Ify's shoulders and she gave me a big shove as I tumbled in through the window. Success. When we finally left, it was a 5 hour drive to Tucson. We'd planned on going to the Kit's Peak Observatory to stargaze but the program was canceled due to inclement weather (I didn't see a single cloud, but hey, I don't make the rules). We went to a great Mexican restaurant called La Fuente for dinner.
Now we're sitting in the Tucson RV Park, and we can hear the Tucson traffic. It's weird to hear sounds of civilization when we've been in the middle of nowhere for so long!
